The experience

This tour runs 8 to 10 hours and starts with pickup from your hotel in Montego Bay, Negril, Falmouth or Grand Palladium. Your private driver and guide handle the route through the mountainous farming villages of Jamaica's interior, and you choose which three stops to visit from the four on offer. The flexibility matters: first-time visitors often want the rum distillery and the waterfall. Others skip one to spend longer at the Black River or the Pelican Bar. The tour adapts to what you actually want to see, not a fixed itinerary.

Appleton Estate sits on the South Coast and is the home of Appleton Rum. A detailed tour walks you through the distillery process, and you'll sample fresh sugar cane juice and taste 10 different Jamaican rums. A complimentary bottle goes home with you. YS Falls is a natural waterfall where you can swim. Note that it closes Mondays, and Appleton shuts on Sundays, so plan your three picks around those days. The Black River is Jamaica's longest navigable river, and a boat ride takes you past native wildlife and local fishermen in dugout canoes. Floyd's Pelican Bar sits a quarter mile offshore on a sandbar, built on stilts by fisherman Floyd Forbes in 2001. The boat ride out takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the bar is set up for swimming, sunbathing, fresh fried fish and sunset views, with a reggae band and cliff diving if you're keen.

Bring cash, water shoes, a change of clothes, sunblock and a camera. Lunch is on your own expense. Entry fees to the attractions are not included in the tour price.
