The Experience

The first thing I noticed as we rolled into the Black River area was the thick, earthy scent in the air—kind of like wet leaves after a summer rain. Our guide, Marlon, waved us over to a small dock where a faded blue boat bobbed gently. He knew every twist of this river. As we drifted along, he pointed out a crocodile sunning itself on a half-submerged log—honestly, I almost missed it because it barely moved. The water looked dark but calm, with mangroves curling over the banks and herons picking their way through the reeds. It felt quiet except for the hum of insects and the occasional splash when something slipped into the water.

After about an hour on the river, we headed for YS Falls. The drive took us past sugar cane fields and tiny roadside fruit stalls—one woman sold peeled oranges in little plastic bags. At YS Falls, you can hear the water before you see it. The falls tumble down over seven tiers, surrounded by thick greenery that almost glows in the sunlight. I tried standing under one of the smaller cascades; it’s cold at first but wakes you right up! There’s a rope swing if you’re feeling brave, or you can just float in one of the natural pools while dragonflies skim overhead. If you want more excitement, there’s a zipline that runs right above the falls—my friend tried it and couldn’t stop grinning afterwards.
