The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Montego Bay hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, then heads south toward YS Falls. A tractor-pulled jitney carries you down to the falls themselves—seven tiers of cascading water that drop into natural pools. You can swim in the 4-foot wading pool surrounded by a patio and garden, or wade into the deeper pools beneath the falls. Lifeguards are on duty. If you want more than swimming, the site also offers a canopy zipline tour (up to 40 feet above the waterfalls) and tubing on the river, though these are optional add-ons. The estate has a restaurant, changing rooms and restrooms on-site.

After YS Falls, the tour moves to Appleton Estate, the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, with documented rum production dating back to 1749. A 1.5-hour guided tour walks you through the property, explaining the history of Jamaican rum and the specifics of how it's made—the sugarcane varieties, yeast for fermentation, distillation and blending methods. You'll see the copper stills in the distillery and oak barrels in the ageing room. At the end, you taste the full range of Appleton rums before heading back to Montego Bay.
