Step-by-step itinerary

ATV safari through Jamaican backcountry

  • Climb aboard your powerful ATV
  • Receive safety briefing and practice session
  • Drive off-road on rugged dirt trails
  • Explore the outback and small village
  • Visit the Oldest Presbyterian Church
  • Enjoy views overlooking the Caribbean Sea
  • Traverse local communities and forests

The Experience

You get a safety briefing and a practice session in a controlled ring before the guide leads you onto the backcountry trails. The terrain mixes dirt paths through forests and open plains with steeper mountain sections, and the route passes through a small Jamaican village and takes you past the Oldest Presbyterian Church, where you stop to take in the view toward the Caribbean Sea. The whole day runs 2 to 3.5 hours from pickup to return, and because you're operating the ATV yourself, the pace and the line of sight are yours to control—not a passenger's view from a vehicle window.

The ride gets muddy and wet depending on recent rain, so bring a change of clothes and a towel; wear long pants or shorts with sneakers or strap-on sandals, and bring sunscreen and glasses to keep mud and dust out of your eyes. Hotel pickup is included from centrally located hotels in the Montego Bay area; if you're staying elsewhere, an extra fee applies. The transfer to the starting point takes roughly 45 minutes each way. You'll need to bring a valid driver's license and cash or a card for any photos, souvenirs or snacks the operator offers along the route.

Top questions

Do I need to have ridden an ATV before to book this?

No prior ATV experience is required. You get a safety briefing and a practice session in a controlled ring before heading out onto the backcountry trails, so the guide walks you through the basics first.

What's the terrain actually like on the trails?

The route mixes rugged dirt trails through forests and open plains with steeper mountain sections. The ride can get muddy and wet, and you're navigating uneven backcountry ground, so physical fitness and comfort with off-road riding matter.

Is hotel pickup really included, or does it cost extra?

Hotel pickup is included from centrally located hotels in the Montego Bay area. If your hotel is outside that central zone, an extra fee applies; contact the operator with your exact accommodation details at booking to confirm whether a surcharge will be added.

What's the maximum group size, and will I be riding alone or with others?

Groups stay at a maximum of 15 riders per departure, so you'll be riding with other travelers. The guide leads the full group through the backcountry together.

What do I need to bring, and what should I wear?

Wear long pants or shorts with sneakers or strap-on sandals. Bring a valid driver's license, sunscreen, and glasses to protect your eyes from mud and dust. Pack a change of clothes and a towel since the ride can get muddy and wet. Bring cash or a credit card for any photos, souvenirs or snacks offered along the route.
