The Experience
We bumped along the red dirt outside Montego Bay, helmets a little too big, goggles already fogging up. Our guide, Andre, grinned as he handed me the keys to my ATV — “Just follow my tracks,” he said, but I was already eyeing the muddy stretch ahead. The engine rumbled under me; it smelled like hot metal and wet earth. I didn’t expect to feel nervous, but there’s something about that first twist of the throttle that gets your heart going.
The trail cut through patches of bush and rocky bits where you had to stand up a little — Andre kept glancing back to check if we were still upright. At one point we stopped by a cluster of wildflowers (I think they were hibiscus?) and he pointed out some goats wandering nearby. There was this moment when we crested a small hill and everything went quiet except for the cicadas — just green hills rolling out ahead.
