The experience
First thing I remember is the way our driver, Andre, grinned when he handed me a helmet outside Montego Bay. “Don’t worry about the mud. It’s part of the fun,” he said. He wasn’t kidding. Then you’re flying through these tangled branches (sunlight flickering through leaves), and it all smells like wet wood and something sweet I couldn’t name. We stopped for jerk chicken lunch (I went for fried instead) with rice and peas. The pepper sauce nearly knocked me sideways but Marsha just laughed and handed me a festival bread to cool it down.
After all that mud and sweat, rolling up to Rick’s Cafe felt almost surreal. Everyone was barefoot or dancing or both. The cliffs looked taller than I expected. Some local kids were showing off with flips into the sea while reggae played so loud you could feel it in your chest. I didn’t jump, maybe next time, but watching the sunset from there with salt still on my skin was something else. Still think about that view sometimes when I hear certain songs.
