The Experience

You're driving out of Florence before most of the city wakes up, heading west toward Pisa on a modern coach with an air-conditioned cabin and a licensed guide who speaks English and Spanish. The Leaning Tower rises 56 meters above the Piazza dei Miracoli (that pale green field ringed by white marble buildings), and it leans at about 4 degrees, which is exactly as strange and real as every photograph you've seen. You walk around the cathedral, the baptistery with its columned arcades, and the Monumental Cemetery, each one sitting on that same impossible grass like they were placed there by someone who didn't believe in streets.

The coach brings you back to Florence in the evening.
