The experience
The coach leaves Florence in the morning and takes about 90 minutes to reach Perugia, where you have free time to wander the medieval hilltop city at your own pace. Piazza IV Novembre, the Fontana Maggiore, and the Perugia Cathedral are the landmarks most visitors seek out, though the Rocca Paolina (an underground fortress built into the hillside) offers a stranger piece of the city's past. If chocolate interests you, the optional tasting at an Eurochocolate Shop walks you through Perugia's chocolate history and lets you sample its most recognized creations. This is available on some purchase options.
From Perugia, the drive continues into Assisi, a town of white stone buildings and churches that sits on a hillside overlooking the green valley below. Before the guided portion begins, you have an hour free to eat lunch. Assisi is known for truffle pastas, vegetable soups, herbed meats, and nut and dried fruit crostini. The local guide then leads you through the town's narrow medieval streets and into the Basilica of St. Francis, where you see frescoes by Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, and Cimabue. After the guided tour, you have more free time to visit the Basilica of Saint Clare on your own, pay respects at the tomb of Carlo Acutis (the first millennial saint), or browse the artisan shops around the main square.
A short drive from Assisi's center takes you to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where your guide shows you the Porziuncola: a small stone chapel where Saint Francis once lived and founded the Franciscan order. The chapel sits inside the larger basilica and is decorated with Gothic frescoes. After this final stop, the return journey to Florence takes about 90 minutes, arriving back in the early evening. The coach is air-conditioned and has free Wi-Fi on board.
