Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Cinque Terre villages by minivan and ferry
- Travel from Pisa by minivan
- Admire scenery from ferry or train
- Visit Riomaggiore village
- Visit Manarola and enjoy views
- Walk and taste gelato in Vernazza
- Free time for lunch or beach in Monterosso
The experience
The day starts with a minivan pickup from Pisa and a drive to the coast, where you board a ferry-boat to reach the villages. The route follows the Mediterranean shoreline, and the boat journey itself is part of the experience. You see the villages as they rise from the water, their pastel buildings stacked against the cliffs. If weather makes ferry service impossible, the same villages are reached by train instead, so the itinerary holds regardless of conditions.
You'll spend time in each village on foot. Riomaggiore and Manarola offer panoramic views of the coastline and the terraced vineyards above. In Vernazzo, the streets are narrow enough that gelato shops and local cafés sit steps from the water. Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the four, gives you free time to choose: lunch at a waterfront restaurant, a swim off the beach, or shopping for local products like wine and olives. The tour leader stays with the group throughout, and the minivan handles transport back to Pisa at the end of the day.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. There is no hiking, but you will be on your feet moving through village streets and along the waterfront. A hat is worth bringing for sun protection. Ferry-boats are weather-dependent, so the operator monitors conditions and switches to train transport if needed. This flexibility is built into the nine-hour window.

Is this one for you?Choose the tour leader option if you want context about each village and a group to move with. Pick the independent version if you prefer to explore at your own pace while the transport is handled for you. Either way, nine hours is enough to see all four villages without rushing, though Monterosso's beach and restaurants may tempt you to linger.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 17 years): free; Infant (under 3): free.
What are the four villages I'll visit on this Cinque Terre tour?
Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazzo and Monterosso al Mare. You reach the first village by minivan, then travel between the others by ferry-boat (or train if weather prevents ferry service). Each village sits on the coast and is explored on foot.
How does the ferry-boat work if the weather is bad?
Ferry-boats operate subject to weather conditions. If they are not running, the tour uses the train to move between villages instead, so the four-village itinerary stays the same either way.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
Lunch is not included. In Monterosso al Mare, you have free time to eat at a local restaurant, grab gelato, swim, or shop. The other villages have cafés and gelato stands if you want something smaller.
Do I need to buy ferry or train tickets separately?
Ferry-boat or train tickets between villages are not included in the tour price and cost up to 35 euros per person. Children pay based on age. The tour leader will arrange these with you on the day.
What is the difference between the Independent and Tour Leader options?
The Cinque Terre with Tour Leader option includes a guide who travels with you all day and leads the group through each village. The Independent option lets you explore the villages on your own schedule while transport and logistics are still arranged.
