The experience
You leave Florence in the morning in an air-conditioned minivan and drive toward the coast. The guide travels with you the whole way, offering context about the landscape and the villages you're about to enter. When you arrive, you'll spend the day moving between three villages on foot, by boat (April through October) or by coastal train (November through March), with time to swim, eat, or simply sit in a harborside café. The boat ride itself is part of the experience. You'll see the villages from the water, the way locals have for centuries.
Manarola is your first stop, a village built almost vertically into the cliffs with narrow alleys (called carrugi) that open suddenly onto the sea. You can walk through it or settle into a bar and watch the water. From there, a shared boat carries you to Monterosso, the largest and most developed of the five villages, where the harbor fills with colorful fishing boats and swimmers. Monterosso has actual beaches and deep-water swimming, plus the medieval Aurora Tower dividing the old town from the newer seafront. Vernazzo comes next: smaller, car-free, built around Piazza Marconi and a 14th-century church, with local shops and restaurants serving Ligurian wine and seafood. In winter, Corniglia replaces Monterosso. It sits on a cliff above the sea and offers panoramic views across the coast.
The boat doesn't run in rough seas or after mid-October, so transfers shift to the local coastal train or minivan depending on conditions. Your guide stays with you except during the train ride between villages. The whole day is ten hours from pickup to return, which gives you real time in each place instead of a rushed sprint. Numbers are capped at eight travelers, so you're not herded through with a crowd.

Top questions
Can I book this tour as a private group instead of joining others?
Yes. The Private Cinque Terre option runs for you and your travel companions only, with the same guide, minivan and boat or train transfers. You choose this option at checkout.
What's the difference between visiting in summer and winter?
April through October, you travel by shared boat between Manarola and Monterosso, then by train to Vernazzo. November through March, the boat doesn't run, so you take the coastal train from Manarola to Vernazzo, and Corniglia (a clifftop village with panoramic views) replaces Monterosso in the itinerary.
Is the boat ride included, or do I pay extra?
The shared boat ride from Manarola to Monterosso (April to October) and the train ride from Manarola to Vernazzo are both included in your tour price. If sea conditions prevent boats from running, transfers switch to the coastal train or minivan at no extra cost.
Do I need to arrange my own way to the meeting point in Florence?
Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included, so you'll need to get yourself to the departure point. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're staying in central Florence.
What should I bring or wear?
Comfortable shoes are recommended because the villages have steep, narrow alleys and uneven terrain. Bring swimwear if you want to use the beaches or jump in at Monterosso. The minivan is air-conditioned, but the villages themselves can be warm in summer.
