The experience
How do you get from Florence to Siena and back without renting a car or joining a group? Your hotel pickup happens at your chosen time in downtown Florence, and a private minivan with an English-speaking driver collects your group and handles the route. The eight-hour day is built around your pace: you set the departure time, and the driver navigates while you focus on what you came to see.
Siena itself is the anchor: a medieval city built on three hills with a seashell-shaped main square (Piazza del Campo) and a Gothic cathedral that dominates the skyline. You walk the black-and-white striped streets of the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and stop at the landmarks the city is known for. The driver stays with the van while you explore on foot, so there's no rushing through or waiting in a group queue. From Siena, you head north on the SS222, the Chiantigiana road, a route that winds through the Chianti region past castles, vineyards and villages. You stop at Castellina in Chianti to see the medieval village and surrounding landscape, then continue to Panzano (an 11th-century fortified town with views over Sangiovese vineyards) and Greve in Chianti, where the Falorni butcher shop has been selling local cold cuts and cheeses for generations. Tasting there is included.
Lunch is optional and arranged in advance: you can eat at a family-owned winery or organic farm where the owner shows you the cellar and the acetaia (vinegar aging room), and the meal comes with wine pairings. Four courses, each paired with a different Chianti or Super Tuscan, plus dessert and ice cream with aged balsamic. That costs extra (€50–60 per person) and is highly recommended if wine and food are why you're going. If you skip it, you still get the winery visit and the Falorni tasting. The minivan is air-conditioned, stocked with unlimited cold water and WiFi, and the driver provides umbrellas if rain comes. Children under 18 can join but cannot drink wine. Vegetarian, gluten-free and allergy-friendly meals are available with 24 hours' notice.
