The Experience
I got lost trying to find the right market stall—turns out “the one with the wild fennel” is not as obvious as you’d think. Letizia just laughed and waved me over, already chatting with the fishmonger like they were cousins. The air smelled of oranges and something sharp, maybe capers? We picked tomatoes that still had dirt on them. I tried to ask for ricotta in Italian and probably said something closer to “rocket.” Giuseppe grinned anyway.
The drive to their country house was all olive groves and the kind of sunlight that makes you squint even behind sunglasses. Rosa, their mother, had flour on her hands before we even took our shoes off. She showed us how to roll pasta dough—mine looked more like lumpy shoelaces than tagliatelle but she patted my shoulder and said “buono!” I believed her for a second. The kitchen felt like someone’s living room; there was music from an old radio, windows open, chickens outside making their own racket.
Lunch happened slowly, which I didn’t expect. We sat around the table for ages, eating what we’d made—eggplant caponata, pasta alla Norma (I still can’t pronounce it right), bread that Rosa baked herself. There was wine but nobody rushed anything. At some point Giuseppe told a story about his grandfather’s lemon trees and everyone started talking at once in Sicilian dialect—I caught maybe three words but felt included anyway. The whole thing was less like a cooking class and more like being adopted for an afternoon.
What’s included
Your day includes shopping for fresh ingredients at a Sicilian market with Letizia’s family before driving out to their country house where you’ll cook together—and then sit down for a leisurely homemade lunch featuring everything you made.
