The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the Segway itself but the way the morning air felt — a mix of bakery smells and scooter exhaust, with church bells echoing somewhere behind Termini. Our guide, Paolo, handed out helmets and did this little demo that made riding look easy (it’s not at first — I wobbled into a trash can and Paolo just grinned). Once we got moving, weaving past locals with their espresso cups, it hit me how much ground you cover on a Segway in Rome. It’s like skipping the sore feet part but still catching all those tiny details you’d miss from a bus window.

We zipped down narrow lanes toward the Trevi Fountain. The sound of water and coins clinking was louder than I expected — maybe because we arrived early enough to beat most crowds. Paolo told us about some old superstition (I think I got it wrong), then pointed out how the marble glows blue in certain light. My hands were cold on the handlebars but I didn’t care. At Campo de’ Fiori, market vendors were already yelling prices over crates of peaches and artichokes. There was this moment where an old man winked at us as we rolled by — no idea why but it made me laugh.

The Pantheon just appears out of nowhere, honestly. You’re rolling along cobbles thinking about lunch and then bam — there it is, columns so massive you feel small in a good way. Paolo let us stop for photos (he even offered to take one where I look halfway competent on the Segway). Later at Piazza Navona, sunlight bounced off fountains and someone played accordion near Sant’Agnese church. We kept moving — Spanish Steps next — but I kept looking back at that square. Still think about it sometimes.
