The Experience

I never thought I’d see the Colosseum and Vatican City in one morning without my feet throbbing, but that’s what happened. Adriano picked us up right near our hotel — he’s a Roman through and through (and an art major, which you’ll notice when he talks about statues). The golf cart was quieter than I expected, just a soft electric hum as we zipped past piazzas where locals were already arguing over espresso strength. At one point, Adriano pointed out some graffiti I’d have missed; he said it’s been there longer than most tourists stay in Rome.

We stopped at the Trevi Fountain just as someone tossed a coin and made a wish — I tried to do it too but nearly hit someone’s gelato. The air smelled like wet stone and sugar from the nearby carts. When we reached Piazza Navona, Adriano told us how Bernini and Borromini hated each other; honestly, his stories made the marble feel less cold somehow. Later, at the Pantheon, he let us linger while he chatted in rapid-fire Italian with another guide (I caught maybe two words — “pioggia” and “caffè”).

The best part? The view from Pincio’s balcony above the Spanish Steps — golden light on domes, scooters buzzing below. I didn’t expect to feel so peaceful in such a busy city. We rolled past the Roman Forum and finally stopped outside the Colosseum. It felt surreal seeing all those layers of history stacked together. My photos don’t do it justice (and my thumb is in half of them), but I still think about that view sometimes.
