The Experience

“Wait, that’s really the Colosseum?” my son blurted out as our golf cart zipped around a corner — and yeah, there it was, just sitting there like it wasn’t one of the most famous things on earth. Our guide Francesca grinned (she had this way of making history sound like gossip) and handed my daughter a puzzle book about gladiators. I could smell coffee drifting from some tiny bar as we bumped over cobbles near Piazza della Repubblica. The kids kept pointing at scooters weaving past us — honestly, I was glad not to be driving anything in Rome.

We stopped at the Trevi Fountain and it was louder than I expected — all that water crashing down, plus people laughing and tossing coins.
