The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it felt, zipping through Rome in this little electric golf cart while the city buzzed all around us. Our guide, Marco, had that Roman way of talking with his hands and somehow steering at the same time—he pointed out details on old churches I’d never have spotted walking. We started in Villa Borghese, which smelled like pine needles and fresh rain on stone. I didn’t expect to feel so lazy (in a good way) as we rolled up to the Spanish Steps—usually I’m sweating by then. There were clusters of people taking selfies, but from our seats we could just watch it all happen, almost like a movie. When we stopped at the Trevi Fountain, Marco handed us coins for the toss—mine landed off to the side and he laughed, saying maybe my wish would come true “in another lifetime.” The sound of water there is louder than you’d think; it sort of drowns out everything else for a second.

Driving past the Colosseum felt surreal—like seeing an old friend in real life after years of postcards and movies. We didn’t go inside (it’s not that kind of tour), but Marco told us stories about gladiators that made me see it differently. Piazza Venezia was chaos—buses honking, scooters weaving—and then suddenly we were gliding into quieter corners again. The Pantheon’s columns looked even bigger from below when you’re sitting low in a golf cart. I tried to pronounce “oculus” properly; Marco pretended not to hear my attempt.

Piazza Navona was full of street performers and kids chasing pigeons. By Castel Sant’Angelo, the river breeze picked up and I realized how much ground we’d covered without ever feeling rushed or tired. It’s weird—I saw more of Rome in three hours than I usually do in two days on foot. Still thinking about that view from the park at the start… might’ve missed it if we’d gone any other way.
