The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel, then heads straight to the Colosseum. You'll pull up to Rome's most recognizable landmark (the ancient amphitheater dating to 80 AD), where your guide walks you through its history as a gladiator arena and UNESCO World Heritage site. From there, the route moves to Piazza Venezia and the Pantheon, where you'll see the unreinforced concrete dome that has stood for nearly two thousand years and the oculus opening to the sky. The driver navigates Rome's streets while you sit back and take in the sights without worrying about traffic or directions.

The second half of the tour crosses the Tiber to Castel Sant'Angelo, originally Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum, where you get views across the river toward the Vatican. Then comes St. Peter's Square and the Vatican itself, where your guide explains the basilica's Renaissance architecture and the Swiss Guard. Before heading back, you'll stop at Fontana dell'Acqua Paola on the Janiculum Hill for views over the whole city and a lesson on the 17th-century Baroque fountain and the aqueduct it commemorates.
