The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the cobblestones rattled under our wheels as we zipped away from Piazza del Gesù—me clutching my coffee, still half asleep. Our guide, Marco, grinned in the mirror and asked if we wanted “the classic Rome or the weird Rome?” I said both, obviously. The city was just waking up, shutters creaking open above us, that faint sweet smell of pastry drifting out of some bakery I couldn’t spot. The breeze picked up near Fontana dell'Acqua Paola—cool mist on my face—and for a second everything went quiet except for church bells somewhere far off. That’s what sticks with me even now.
