The Experience
We zipped off from Piazza del Popolo, helmets on and my nerves buzzing — I’d never actually been on a Vespa before. Angelo, our guide, just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll see Rome differently today.” The city felt alive in a way I hadn’t expected; exhaust mixed with the smell of fresh espresso drifting from some corner bar as we wove through early traffic. There’s something about hearing Italian shouted between market vendors while you’re clinging to the back of a scooter that makes you feel like you’re really here, you know?
Our first big stop was the Colosseum. Angelo pulled over right where the sunlight hit those old stones just right — he had this trick for parking in spots only locals would dare. He told us about gladiators (I mean, everyone does), but then pointed out little things I’d never noticed: stray cats sunbathing on marble steps, the way tourists cluster for selfies but miss the quiet corners. We took photos until my phone nearly died. At one point he handed me a tiny raincoat “just in case” — I laughed because there wasn’t a cloud anywhere.
We ducked into Trastevere for coffee. The barista knew Angelo by name and poured our espressos without asking what we wanted. That’s when it hit me — this wasn’t just some day trip around Rome; it was seeing how people actually live here. My hands were still buzzing from holding onto the Vespa (those cobblestones are no joke), but I didn’t care. Later we coasted past Circus Maximus and through alleys so narrow I could’ve touched both walls if I stretched out my arms.
The last thing I remember is watching evening light spill over Piazza Venezia while scooters buzzed around us like bees. My hair was a mess under the helmet, but honestly? I still think about that view sometimes when I hear traffic back home.
