The Experience

We hopped onto the back of this bright red Vespa right by the Colosseum—helmet a little loose, heart thumping in that way it does when you’re about to do something slightly out of your comfort zone. Our guide, Marco, grinned and said “Ready?” like he’d done this a thousand times (he probably has). The first few minutes were all engine hum and ancient stones blurring by—then suddenly we stopped for photos. I’m not usually one for posing, but the photographer had us laughing so much I forgot to feel awkward. There’s something about Roman air that makes everything feel lighter.

We zipped past Circus Maximus—Marco pointed out where the chariots would’ve thundered around the track. I tried to imagine 250,000 people shouting here centuries ago; now it’s just locals jogging and a couple of stray dogs napping in the sun. At Giardino degli Aranci, orange blossoms mixed with espresso drifting from somewhere nearby. The view over Rome made me stop talking for once. You know those moments when you want to bottle up a smell or a color? That was one of them.

The Fontana dell’Acqua Paola was next—water splashing against old marble, tourists snapping selfies but somehow it didn’t feel crowded. We wound up at Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi for another panorama (I still think about that view), then bounced down into Trastevere’s tangled lanes. Marco knew every shortcut; he waved at an old man selling flowers who winked back at us. The ride ended before I was ready—back in the city center, helmet hair and all, with twenty-five photos on my phone and dust on my shoes.
