Three hours on a Segway past 2,000 years of Roman stone

You'll ride a Segway past the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Circus Maximus with a live guide explaining each site, stop for a VR experience that reconstructs ancient Rome, and end at the Mouth of Truth for photos. The small-group format (max 8 riders) keeps the pace manageable and the guide attentive. Helmets, jackets if needed, and an orientation session are included; you just need to be 16 or older, comfortable on a self-balancing scooter, and ready for three hours of moving through central Rome.

2h 30m

Step-by-step itinerary

  • View Palatine Archaeological Site
  • See Circus Maximus and VR stop
  • View Roman Forum from Capitoline Hill
  • Stop for VR experience at Roman Forum
  • View Piazza Venezia and Vittoriano monument
  • See St. Peter's dome from Knights of Malta
  • Visit Orange Trees Garden viewpoint
  • View Theatre Marcellus and Jewish Synagogue
  • Stop for photos at Mouth of Truth

The Experience

The Mouth of Truth sits in a church portico near the Tiber, and the legend says it'll snap shut on your hand if you lie. You'll actually test it on this tour, which sounds like a gimmick until you're standing there with your hand inside and your guide's dry commentary making the whole thing feel real. But that's the last stop. The three hours before it move fast, and they're the reason you book.

You start with an orientation session — how to lean, how the Segway responds, what the brake feels like — and then you're moving through Rome on a self-balancing electric scooter, following a guide who stops at the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and a handful of smaller sites that most walking tours skip or rush through. The Segway does something a bus can't: it lets you move at the pace of the ruins themselves, slow enough to actually hear what your guide is saying about the stone in front of you, fast enough that you're not standing still for twenty minutes waiting for the group. The group stays under eight people, which means the guide can actually see you and adjust the pace if someone's struggling with the balance.

There's a VR stop built into the itinerary — you put on a headset and see the Roman Forum as it was, buildings intact, crowds moving through it, the whole thing reconstructed in digital space. It's disorienting in the best way, because you're standing in the actual ruins while watching them come alive. After that, the real stones feel different. You'll also see the view of St. Peter's dome through the Keyhole of the Knights of Malta Palace, and the Theatre Marcellus, and Piazza Venezia with the Vittoriano monument. The route covers ground, but the Segway does the work.

You need to be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 40 kilograms. Wear comfortable shoes — you're not walking much, but you'll be standing on the Segway, and your feet matter. Bring a form of ID and your confirmation voucher. If the weather turns, they provide wet jackets and helmets are included. The tour runs in English, and it's three hours from start to finish, so plan the rest of your day around that block of time.

What’s included

  • Your tour includes the Segway rental, helmet, wet weather jacket if required, an orientation session before you start, and a live English-speaking guide for the full three hours.
  • You'll also have access to the VR experience at the Roman Forum stop, which reconstructs ancient Rome in digital space.
  • All stops for photos and explanations at the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, Mouth of Truth, and other sites are built into the itinerary.
