The experience
The Path of the Gods is a single 7 km descent from Agerola that moves through the agricultural terraces and wild vegetation of the Amalfi Coast, dropping steadily toward the sea without climbing back up. A professional local guide meets you and sets the pace through the Mediterranean scrub, stopping at the most dramatic panoramic points to explain the history of these villages and how the land is farmed on near-vertical slopes. The route is built around the geology and the old ways of living that still hold in these small communities, not around rushing between named sites.
The walk takes three to four hours and covers terrain that is steep in places, with loose stone and uneven footing common on the descent. You'll move through the scents and colors of wild herbs and flowering plants, past the cultivations that have terraced these cliffs for centuries, and arrive at views where the rocky walls drop sheer into the sea. The guide carries the knowledge of the place (the myths, the crops, the families who have stayed), and speaks either English or Italian depending on your preference.
If you drive to Agerola yourself, you can arrange a ring route that ends where you started, avoiding the need for a return transfer. Bottled water and coffee or tea are included. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes built for walking on natural terrain, and bring sun protection. The trail is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with cardiovascular concerns, and children must be at least ten years old.
