- See mosaics from Vesuvian cities
- View frescoes from 79 AD eruption
- Examine everyday life objects
- Visit Villa dei papiri di Ercolano collection
The experience
What's actually in this museum? Thousands of objects pulled from the cities Vesuvius destroyed in 79 AD, not replicas or reconstructions, but the real mosaics, frescoes and everyday items that were buried and preserved for nearly two thousand years. The collection spans the Villa dei Papiri from Herculaneum, household goods from Pompeii, and finds from Stabia and Oplonti. You also move through the Farnese collection of monumental statues, including the Hercules and the Toro group, and the Egyptian collection that opened here as one of the first of its kind in a modern museum.
The tour itself is two hours inside the seventeenth-century palazzo that faces one of Naples' main arteries in the historic center. A live guide walks you through the galleries in English, Spanish or Italian, pointing out the mosaics and frescoes that show what daily life looked like before the eruption, alongside objects so specific (oil lamps, coins, bread) that they make the moment real. The museum is wheelchair accessible and strollers are welcome, so families with young children and older travelers can move through at their own pace.
Two options exist at checkout. The Museum option covers the guided tour alone. If you choose Museum plus historical center, pickup from your hotel is included and the guide extends the experience into Naples' old city. Either way, you buy entrance tickets separately at €15 per adult (children under a certain age enter free).
