Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Naples city center highlights

  • Meet guide at Neptune Fountain
  • Visit Castel Nuovo castle
  • Admire Piazza del Plebiscito square
  • See Galleria Umberto I architecture
  • Walk along Spaccanapoli street
  • Pass San Gregorio Armeno street

The Experience

Your guide meets you at the Neptune Fountain and walks you through the heart of Naples without needing a car or advance planning of stops. The route covers two hours on foot, moving between the medieval Castel Nuovo — built during French rule and enlarged under Spanish control — and the neoclassical Piazza Plebiscito, where the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola mirrors the Pantheon's proportions and the Royal Palace anchors the square's far side. You'll pass through the Galleria Umberto I, an iron-and-glass arcade in Italian liberty style, before heading into the older grid of the city.

Spaccanapoli is the ancient decumanus, a street that cuts straight through Naples' oldest neighborhoods and carries the weight of centuries in its narrow passage. Your guide leads the way and tells the legends and stories the street holds. From there, San Gregorio Armeno Street opens into something entirely different — workshops where artisans build nativity figures in bright paint and traditional dress, filling the street with color and music. It's a working craft quarter, not a museum, and the guide's knowledge of the city's customs and traditions shapes how you move through it.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water; the pavement is uneven in places and the route has no long stops. The guide is a Blue Badge professional who speaks English and knows the art, history and local detail that turns a walk into an understanding of how the city is built and why it matters.

Top questions

What is Spaccanapoli and why does the guide take us there?

Spaccanapoli is one of Naples' most ancient streets, a straight passage through the old city that follows the Roman decumanus layout. Your guide walks you through it and shares the stories and legends embedded in the neighborhood, showing how the city's oldest quarter is still lived in and used today.

Will I see the inside of churches or just walk past them?

You enter Piazza Plebiscito to see the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola and the Royal Palace from the square itself. The tour focuses on the exteriors and the architecture you encounter on the walking route; it is not a church-interior tour.

Is this tour suitable for someone who hasn't visited Naples before?

Yes — the guide is trained to explain the history, art and traditions of the city, so you don't need prior knowledge. The two-hour pace and the five major stops give you a solid introduction to the city center and how its landmarks connect.

What makes San Gregorio Armeno Street different from the other stops?

San Gregorio Armeno is a working artisan quarter where craftspeople build and sell traditional nativity figures. Unlike the monuments and squares, it's a living craft street with color, music and people at work — your guide will explain the tradition and the skill involved.

Do I need to book entry tickets separately for any of the sites?

No. The tour is a walking route through the city center; you view the exteriors and interiors of public squares and passages. No separate entry fees or advance bookings are required for any of the stops.

Can children come on this tour?

Yes, children from age one are welcome. The tour is two hours of walking on city streets and squares, so comfortable shoes and a moderate pace suit families with older children best.
