The experience
The Alexander Mosaic dominates the first floor: a massive Roman copy of a Hellenistic painting showing Alexander the Great facing Darius III across a battlefield. Your guide walks you through the composition and what archaeologists know about the original. The museum itself occupies a former cavalry barrack, and the layout moves you through centuries: mosaics and frescoes from Pompeii and the Bay of Naples region, each one a window into how people actually lived under the Empire.
The ground floor holds the Farnese Collection, two monumental marble sculptures that anchor the entire room. The Farnese Hercules and the Farnese Bull both came from the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and are among the most imposing classical sculptures in existence. Your guide explains their provenance and what made them prized enough to move across the empire. The bronzes from the Villa of the Papyri, the seaside villa buried by Vesuvius, follow, along with smaller objects that survived the eruption intact.
If the sections are open that day, you'll also see the Secret Cabinet, a collection of erotic and sexual items from brothels and private homes, and the Egyptian Collection. The tour covers ground efficiently without rushing. You meet your guide at the main entrance and choose your preferred time slot when you book.

What is the Alexander Mosaic and why is it in Naples?
The Alexander Mosaic is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic painting showing Alexander the Great meeting Darius III in battle, discovered during excavations in Pompeii. It's housed in MANN because the museum holds the major artworks and artifacts from the Pompeii region and the Bay of Naples.
Are the Farnese Hercules and Farnese Bull the only large sculptures in the museum?
The Farnese Hercules and Farnese Bull are the most famous, but the Farnese Collection includes other marbles as well. Both of these monumental pieces originally stood in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome before being moved to Naples.
What are the bronzes from the Villa of the Papyri?
The Villa of the Papyri was a seaside Roman villa buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The bronzes (statues, vessels and smaller objects) were preserved by the ash and are now displayed in MANN, offering a rare look at bronze work from daily life and decoration in a wealthy household.
Will the Secret Cabinet and Egyptian Collection definitely be open during my tour?
The Secret Cabinet and Egyptian Collection are worth visiting if the sections are open that day, but access can vary. Your guide will show you what is available during your two-hour visit.
