Climb through lemon groves and oak forest to eat what the family grows

A three-and-a-half-hour activity in Positano combines a guided walk up the hillside village of Montepertuso with a dinner in a family cellar. You climb past terraced vineyards, lemon groves and medicinal plants, pass through the Buco di Montepertuso rock formation, and end on a natural balcony overlooking the coast. The meal (farm appetizers, eggplant parmigiana, rigatoni with ragù and meatballs, pasta and beans, and tiramisu) is served on a sea-view terrace or in the cellar depending on weather, paired with the family's own wine.

The experience

The walk itself is the entry point. You start on one of the paths that winds through the Buco di Montepertuso, the rock arch that gave the village its name, and your guide tells the legends and history tied to it. The route climbs through Mediterranean scrub (oak, holm oak, strawberry trees, chestnut), and crosses natural stairs built into the hillside. As you gain height, the terraces come into view: vineyards, lemon groves, vegetable plots worked by hand. This is not a manicured trail. It is the landscape the locals move through daily, and the guide narrates the traditions and hard work that shaped it.

The cellar has belonged to the same family for four generations. When you arrive, you step into a working space, not a restaurant, where the meal unfolds as the family cooks and serves it. Farm-cured meats and cheeses from the Lattari Mountains open the spread, followed by eggplant parmigiana layered with mozzarella and parmesan, then rigatoni with the family's own meat sauce and meatballs. Pasta and beans cooked in a terracotta pan comes next, and tiramisu closes the meal. Wine from the family's vineyard accompanies the courses for guests aged 18 and over. The terrace overlooks the sea if the weather holds. If not, you eat in the cellar itself.

Your guide speaks English, Italian or German and stays with the group throughout. Bring at least half a litre of water and wear comfortable shoes with non-slip soles. The uphill walk is steady but manageable. Children from age four are welcome, and the family can accommodate infants in a pram or stroller on the lower sections of the path.

Is this one for you?The walk climbs steadily uphill through natural stairs and terraced slopes, so wear non-slip shoes and bring water. The pace is manageable for most fitness levels, but the terrain is uneven and the ascent is real. This is a working hillside, not a groomed trail. If you want to eat food the family grows and cooks, and you are willing to walk to reach it, this suits you.
