The Experience

It started with our driver waving from across Piazzale Montelungo — not the usual stiff greeting, just a quick “Ciao!” and a grin. The car ride out of Florence was quieter than I expected; I kept watching olive trees flicker past while the city faded behind us. Our guide, Marta, chatted about her grandmother’s kitchen and how she still can’t make gnocchi as light. I believed her — she laughed at herself a lot, which made me relax. There was this faint smell of rosemary even before we reached the villa (maybe my imagination), but when we stepped out, the air really did feel different. Softer? Maybe just cleaner than Florence traffic.

The kitchen was bright but not fancy — big wooden table, bowls everywhere, flour already dusting my sleeves before we’d even started. Marta handed us aprons and poured a welcome drink (I spilled mine a bit on the counter — nobody cared).
