The Experience

“You ever seen Florence from up here?” That’s how our guide Marco started as we squeezed into this tiny, sun-yellow Fiat 500 cabrio. I was grinning like an idiot before we’d even left the curb. The car’s electric now—so it just hummed as we wound out of the city, past stone walls and olive trees. There was this faint smell of wild rosemary through the window, which I guess I never noticed walking around Florence before. Marco kept pointing out old villas and stories about Galileo (I only half caught some of it—too busy staring at the view).

The road up to Arcetri felt like a little secret—no crowds, just quiet lanes and these ridiculous Tuscan hills rolling away in every direction. We stopped outside Villa Il Gioiello, where Galileo lived his last years. Marco joked that Galileo would’ve loved the silence of an electric car for stargazing. I tried to imagine him peering out over these same hills. It was warm but not hot, cicadas buzzing somewhere off in the grass.

When we got to San Miniato al Monte, I didn’t expect the hush inside—just a couple locals lighting candles and that cool stone under my hands. The city looked almost unreal from up there; you could see every terracotta roof and the Duomo poking up through morning haze. At Piazzale Michelangelo later, Marco insisted on snapping our photo (“Trust me, it’s better if you don’t pose!”). He brought out a bottle of Chianti and tarallini crackers for our picnic—I still think about that first sip with all of Florence laid out below us. We sat on the hood (probably not allowed) just talking about nothing much until it was time to head back down.
