The Experience

I’ll never forget the way our driver, Matteo, waved at a woman balancing two bags of oranges as we squeezed past the market near San Lorenzo. The little things: catching bits of local gossip as we paused near Piazza della Repubblica, seeing kids chase pigeons while their parents sipped espresso, or hearing Matteo’s stories about Dante’s house and why everyone still argues about gelato flavors here. We didn’t go inside any museums or churches—just took it all in from outside—but somehow that made me notice more. Florence seemed less like a postcard and more like a place people actually live. I still think about that view over the rooftops at sunset; it’s stuck with me in a way I didn’t expect.
