itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Florence golf cart tour and sightseeing

  • Meet driver and board golf cart
  • Drive through Florence and Tuscan hills
  • Stop for panoramic photos
  • Visit Roman Theatre and Archaeological Museum
  • Drive scenic road to Piazzale Michelangelo
  • Stop at Piazzale Michelangelo viewpoint

We were already rumbling out of Florence in this funny little golf cart before I realized how quiet the city sounds from up here. Our driver, Paolo, kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed — a faded fresco on a wall, the way the cypress trees lean into the road. The air smelled like warm stone and something sweet, maybe wildflowers? I didn’t expect to feel so far away from the city so quickly. The audio guide was there if you wanted it, but honestly Paolo’s stories about growing up near Fiesole were better.

The Roman Theatre in Fiesole is older than Florence itself (which Paolo seemed very proud of). We got our tickets and wandered around for half an hour — just us and a couple of elderly locals chatting in Italian by the old stones. You can actually sit on the ancient steps and look down at what used to be the stage; I tried to imagine actors performing with that view behind them. There’s a tiny museum too, full of odd little artifacts — I liked the cracked pottery best for some reason. It felt peaceful, almost sleepy.

The drive back down toward Piazzale Michelangelo was all golden light and those endless Tuscan hills. When we stopped at the overlook, everyone went quiet for a second — you can see all of Florence laid out below, Duomo shining in the haze. Someone nearby started playing guitar softly (not part of the tour but honestly perfect timing). That view sticks with me even now. We piled back into the golf cart feeling like we’d been somewhere much further away than just outside Florence.
