You board a double-decker bus and ride past Florence's main landmarks — Piazzale Michelangelo, Santa Croce, Pitti Palace, the Cathedral — hopping off and back on as many times as you like throughout the day. The included app tracks buses in real time and offers a free walking tour in five languages. You get the sightseeing without arranging transport between stops or timing yourself to a guide's pace.
The bus pulls up to Piazzale Michelangelo and you're suddenly level with the city's skyline — the Duomo, the Arno, the terracotta roofs all spreading out below you from the top deck. That's the thing about a hop-on hop-off bus in Florence: you get the sightseeing without having to navigate the narrow streets on foot, and you can stay on as long as you want at any stop. The double-decker design means the upper level gives you sight lines you'd never get from street level, and the route hits the main attractions — Santa Croce, Pitti Palace, San Marco, the Cathedral — without forcing you into a rigid itinerary.
The Sightseeing Experience app is what makes this work. You download it before you board, and it shows you where each bus is in real time, how long you'll wait at the next stop, and your own position on the map so you're never guessing which direction to walk. There's also a free walking tour built into the app in five languages, which means if you hop off at, say, Largo Alinari or Piazza Indipendenza, you've got directions and context without paying extra. Free Wi-Fi is on the bus itself, so you can actually use the app while you're moving. Line A runs through the south side of the city — Piazzale Michelangelo, Santa Croce, the Leopolda park area — while Line B heads toward Fiesole and the Museo del Calcio if you want to venture a bit further out.
You're not locked into a schedule. Hop off at the Cathedral, spend two hours inside if you want, then catch the next bus when you're ready. The visitor center at the train station (SMN) has staff who can answer questions about the stops and the app, so if you're confused about where to go next, there's actual help available. The whole point is flexibility — you choose how long to spend at each landmark, which stops matter to you, and whether you want to see everything in one day or spread it across the morning and afternoon.
