The Experience

You meet your guide at Marina Grande in the morning, and the first thing you do is get into a small wooden boat to enter the Blue Grotto. The water inside is that particular shade of blue—it's the light bouncing off the limestone and the sea floor at once, and it's real, not a photograph trick. You duck through the low entrance and then you're in it. The grotto itself is maybe 60 meters long, and the boat moves slowly so you can look around. It's the kind of thing that sounds touristy until you're actually there, and then it's just quiet and blue.

After the grotto, your guide takes you to Anacapri, the older, less polished part of the island. This is where locals actually live, where the streets are narrower and the pace is different. You get free time to walk around, and if you want, you can visit Villa San Michele—a house built by a Swedish doctor in the early 1900s, now a museum with views down to the coast. Or you can take the chairlift up Mount Solaro, the highest point on Capri. The ride takes about 12 minutes, and from the top you can see across the whole island and out toward the mainland. On a clear day it's the kind of view that makes you understand why people came here in the first place.

Then you head down to Capri town itself, which is the opposite energy—narrow streets packed with designer shops, La Piazzetta (the main square) where people sit and watch other people, and the whole thing designed to feel exclusive and a bit theatrical. You walk through to the Gardens of Augustus, a botanical garden that overlooks the bay and the Faraglioni—those three tall rock formations sticking out of the water that you've probably seen in photos. From the garden you can also see Via Krupp, a zigzag stone path carved into the cliff that connects the upper town to the beach below. Your guide points out the details, but mostly you're free to move at your own pace. There's time to walk Via Camerelle if you want to look at the shops, or just sit somewhere and let the afternoon happen. The tour ends back at Marina Grande in the afternoon, same place you started.
