“If you want to see the real color of Capri, you have to look at the water,” our captain Salvatore said as he steered us out of Positano’s little harbor. He had this way of talking—half storytelling, half teasing—that made me feel like we’d known him longer than five minutes. The boat was smaller than I expected (in a good way), and the air smelled faintly salty, mixed with something citrusy—maybe lemons from the coast? I still can’t decide if it was the sea breeze or just my nerves making my hair stand up as we pulled away from shore.

The Amalfi Coast looks different from the water. You notice things you’d never spot from land—tiny beaches tucked under cliffs, old fishermen waving as we passed by. Salvatore pointed out a village where his uncle apparently makes “the best limoncello,” which might be true because what he poured for us tasted like summer itself. We drifted past the White Grotto first; inside, light bounced off limestone so sharply that for a second I thought my sunglasses were fogged up. Then came the Green Grotto, which glowed underneath like someone had switched on an underwater lamp. It’s hard to describe that color—it’s not quite emerald, not quite turquoise. Just… Capri green?

We circled around to see the Faraglioni rocks (Salvatore called them by name—Stella, Mezzo, Scopolo) and I almost dropped my phone trying to get a photo when a seagull swooped right over us. There was time to swim—cold at first but worth it for how quiet everything got once you ducked your head under. Lunch was wherever we wanted; we picked a place right above Marina Piccola where they served pasta that tasted better because my skin was still salty from swimming. If you want to visit the Blue Grotto (we did), there’s an extra fee and you squeeze into these tiny rowboats—it’s chaotic but kind of hilarious too.

I didn’t expect to laugh as much as I did or feel so sleepy on the ride back while sipping beer and watching the sun start to dip behind Positano’s cliffs. The towels were warm from sitting in the sun all day. Sometimes I still think about how blue everything looked out there—like it might’ve been exaggerated if I hadn’t seen it myself.
