The Experience
The drive along the Amalfi Coast never gets old—windows down, sea breeze sneaking in, and that salty tang mixing with the scent of lemon groves. Our driver knew every twist in the road, pointing out little fishing villages tucked into the cliffs. When we pulled up at the vineyard, I could see rows of vines—Aglianico and Piedirosso grapes, our guide said—stretching across the hillside. There’s something about seeing those 3,500 plants per hectare up close that makes you appreciate each glass a bit more.
We wandered through the vines before heading to a terrace with a view that just sort of sneaks up on you. The table was already set: local cheeses (the kind that squeak when you bite them), salami with peppercorns, and a few things I couldn’t name but tasted anyway. The wines were poured—deep reds, earthy and bold—and our host explained how each one gets its flavor from this rocky soil. You could hear church bells from down in the valley if you listened close.
Afterwards, we had some free time in Vietri sul Mare. It’s famous for ceramics—bright plates and bowls stacked outside tiny shops. I lost track of time poking around; even found a small tile to bring home. If you want more history or stories behind the patterns, you can book a licensed guide too (costs extra). Either way, it’s easy to get swept up in the colors and chatter of this place.
