The Experience

The bus climbs Mount Vesuvius starting at 10am, winding up to around 1,000 metres where the road ends and the walking begins. From there it's a steady hike to the crater itself — the actual rim where you stand and look down into the volcano that buried Pompeii. The air changes as you climb. Your guide points out the volcanic soil, the way nothing grows quite the same way it does anywhere else, and then you're there, looking at the crater. A camera matters here. The Bay of Naples spreads out below, and on a clear day you can see all the way across.

After the hike, the tour moves to a local vineyard planted in that same volcanic soil. This is where Lacrima Christi grows — a wine with roots in the region going back centuries, the kind of thing that tastes different because of where it comes from. You walk through the winery, learn how they work with the land, and then sit down to lunch. It's light, seasonal stuff: grilled vegetables, bruschetta, fritters, Sicilian-style pasta, lemon cake.
