The experience
Day one starts with a scenic drive from Surabaya to the Tumpak Sewu trailhead. You trek down a jungle path into a lush canyon where the waterfall drops in tiers, surrounded by moss-covered rock and tropical greenery. Your guide leads the descent and helps with photos at the base. The hike down and back up takes the morning and early afternoon. After the waterfall, the tour continues to Goa Tetes, a hidden cave near the basin where water trickles from the ceiling and natural rock formations create a mystical atmosphere. Wear sturdy footwear. The terrain is wet and rocky. You'll overnight in a comfortable hotel near Bromo, where you can rest or walk the nearby village.
Day two begins before dawn with a jeep ride to Mount Penanjakan, one of the best sunrise viewpoints in the Bromo massif. You watch the sun rise behind Mount Semeru and see the panorama of Bromo's volcanic landscape unfold. After sunrise, the jeep descends to the Sea of Sand, where you walk or ride a horse to the base of Mount Bromo (horse riding is optional). You climb the staircase to the crater rim and stand at the edge of the active volcano. On the way, you pass Pura Luhur Poten, a sacred Hindu temple in the middle of the Sea of Sand, which marks the spiritual heart of the landscape for the Tenggerese people.
The tour includes one night's accommodation, breakfast both days, a coffee break, all entrance fees, a private air-conditioned vehicle, a 4WD jeep for the Bromo section, fuel, tolls and parking. An English-speaking guide leads the entire tour and assists with the waterfall trek. Hotel pickup is available from Surabaya or Malang.
