The experience

The tour picks you up from your Malang or Surabaya hotel at 11pm and drives three hours to Cemorolawang village at the base of Mount Bromo. From there you head to Penanjakan (also called Kingkong Hill) to watch the sunrise unfold over the volcanic landscape: a three-hour window from 3am to 6am. After sunrise, the route takes you through Bukit Cinta and Widodaren, two viewpoints that frame the mountain and its surroundings, before you hike down into the crater itself to see the temple at its base. The hike takes about two hours round-trip with the jeep waiting at the parking lot.

From Mount Bromo you travel to Madakaripura waterfall, one of East Java's least-known sites. A motorbike taxi takes you the final stretch to the falls, where you have until 2pm to explore before heading back to Malang or Surabaya. Lunch happens during this window and is on your own. The drive back takes three hours, arriving around 6pm. Your guide speaks English and travels with you the entire day. The private car holds up to six passengers, and all park tickets, fuel, tolls and the motorbike taxi to the waterfall are covered.
