The experience
The tour leaves Malang at 6 a.m. and takes the Lumajang road for roughly three hours to reach the Tumpaksewu region. Once there, you trek through forest for two to three hours to reach the foot of Tumpak Sewu, one of East Java's largest waterfalls. The route includes a panoramic viewpoint above the falls (on clear days you can frame the waterfall with a rainbow, an active volcano and Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak) before descending to the base for photos from different angles and a swim in Telaga Biru, a natural pond reinforced after the 2023 flood.
From the swimming area, limestone stairs and a steel ladder lead to Goa Tetes, a cave site few travelers find. You explore it at your own pace before returning to the parking area. The return journey to Malang follows the same route but at a different time of day, with a stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the way. Your private guide speaks English, Arabic or Korean, and the vehicle is air-conditioned.
The trek is not wheelchair accessible and requires at least moderate fitness. The terrain involves forest paths, stairs and a ladder. Bring sandals or trekking shoes and a swimsuit. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
