The Experience

The first thing I remember is the crunch of gravel under the jeep tires, way before sunrise — honestly, I was half-asleep when our guide knocked on the hotel door in Surabaya. It was still pitch dark outside, that kind of deep black you only get far from city lights. The air inside the car smelled faintly of instant coffee and something sweet — maybe the driver’s cologne? I dozed off again until we reached the Bromo area, where everything changed: cold air rushed in as we switched to a battered 4WD jeep, and suddenly I was wide awake.

Our guide, Pak Agus, grinned as we bounced along those wild roads. He pointed out shadowy outlines — “That’s Semeru,” he said, “still active.” We reached Mt. Penanjakan just as a thin orange line cracked open the horizon. There were maybe a dozen other people there (mostly locals), all bundled up in scarves and jackets. Someone handed me a tiny cup of ginger tea; it burned my throat in the best way. When the sun finally rose behind Mount Bromo itself, everyone got quiet for a second — except for one kid who kept giggling every time his dad tried to take a photo. I still think about that view sometimes.

After sunrise, we rattled down toward the sea of sand — it really does look like another planet up there. Walking to the crater rim felt surreal; sulfur hung in the air and every step crunched like walking on old snow. Pak Agus told us stories about Pura Luhur Poten temple below (“Hindu ceremonies here are older than most cities,” he said). My legs were shaking by then but somehow it didn’t matter. Breakfast at Lava View felt more like relief than anything fancy: hot rice, eggs, sweet tea — simple but perfect after that climb. We drove back to Malang quietly; everyone just stared out the window or napped.
