Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and cave
- Pickup from Malang or Surabaya
- See gigantic curtain of waterfalls
- Explore natural cave with stalactites
- Enjoy scenic views and photos
- Drop-off at your location
The experience
Tumpak Sewu is a curtain waterfall (a wall of water dropping into a lush green valley), and the tour gets you down to the base where you feel the raw power of it. Your guide meets you at your hotel in Malang or Surabaya and drives you there in an air-conditioned vehicle. The entrance fee is included. The descent is moderate but real: you're walking into a valley, not standing on an overlook. Bottled water comes with you.
Once you reach the valley floor, the waterfall fills your view. A natural cave sits nearby with walls glistening from spray, decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, and lit by sunlight pouring through openings in the rock. You move between the two at your own pace, stopping to photograph and absorb the scale of the place. The guide speaks English and knows the terrain, so you're not navigating alone.
The full day (six to twelve hours depending on how long you linger) includes the drive, the walk down and back, and time at both the waterfall and the cave. Parking fees are covered. You'll want moderate fitness for the descent and return. The path is uneven and involves scrambling over rocks and through water. Water shoes help on the slippery sections and can be added at checkout if you don't have your own.

Top questions
How long does it take to get from Malang to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall?
The full tour runs six to twelve hours from pickup to drop-off, depending on how much time you spend at the waterfall and cave and the pace of the descent. Most of that is the experience itself rather than driving time.
What is the cave at Tumpak Sewu like?
The natural cave has walls covered in stalactites and stalagmites, and daylight streams in through openings in the rock, illuminating the interior without artificial lighting. It sits near the base of the waterfall and is part of the same visit.
Do I need special shoes or gear for this tour?
Water shoes are useful because the rocks at the waterfall base are slippery, and you'll be walking through water. They're available as an add-on at checkout. If you bring your own sturdy footwear, that works too.
Can I book this tour starting from Surabaya instead of Malang?
Yes, the tour departs from either Malang or Surabaya. You choose your starting point at checkout. Pickup is included from your hotel in whichever city you select.
What's included in the tour price?
The price covers private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, the entrance fee to Tumpak Sewu, parking, bottled water, and an English-speaking guide. Meals and gratuities are not included.
