The experience

Day one starts with a 6 AM pickup from your Malang hotel and a drive to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. You spend three hours exploring the waterfall and the adjacent Goa Tetes Cave, moving through the canyon landscape before returning to your hotel by early afternoon. The second day begins at midnight. The tour collects you at 12:05 AM and drives to Tosari village near Mount Bromo, arriving by 2:30 AM. A 4WD jeep takes you to the sunrise viewpoint, where you wait with coffee and tea while the sky lightens over the volcanic landscape.

At 4:30 AM the sun rises over the crater. You watch until 6 AM, then hike to the top of Mount Bromo itself to stand at the rim and see the smoking crater up close. The walk takes about ninety minutes. Afterward, you descend to Tosari village for breakfast at a local restaurant, then drive back to your original pickup point in Malang by noon. If you need to end the tour at Surabaya city or the airport instead, the driver can arrange that for an extra charge paid in cash to the guide. If you choose this option, bring all your luggage with you on the midnight pickup so the driver can store it while you trek.
