The experience

Three days means you fit three separate mountain experiences into one trip without rushing any of them. Day one takes you to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, where a 2–3 hour walk follows the river and passes through Goa Tetes cave to see stalactites before you reach the waterfall itself. You see it from above and below, moving through the landscape rather than standing at a viewpoint. That night you stay in the Bromo area.

Day two is the sunrise climb. You drive to King Kong Hill before dawn and watch the sun rise over three mountains at once (Bromo, Semeru, and Batok) from a single vantage point. After the sunrise, a 4x4 jeep takes you down into the Bromo crater itself so you can walk on the volcanic floor and feel the scale of it. You then travel to Bondowoso for the second night.

Day three is the night hike to Mount Ijen. The crater holds a lake of green sulfur water, but the draw is the blue fire: sulfur streams that ignite as they emerge from the mountain, visible only in darkness. It's one of only two places on earth where this occurs. The hike is steep and takes several hours, and you finish at Ketapang Harbour, where the tour includes a free ferry ticket to Bali if you're heading that way.
