The experience
How do you get to the peak before the crowds and the heat? A 4:15 AM pickup from your Berastagi hotel means you're on the trail while it's still dark, climbing toward the sunrise. Mount Sibayak is a beginner's hike (the terrain is manageable and the distance short), but the payoff is the view from the summit: the Karo Highlands spread below, other volcanic peaks visible in the distance, and the light changing as the sun clears the horizon. The guide leads you through the mountain's craters and points out the geothermal features (steam vents and sulfuric ground) that mark this as active volcanic land.
After the descent, the hike ends at Lau Sidebukdebuk, a natural hot spring in Semangat Gunung Village at the foot of Mount Sibayak. The water runs 40–45°C, heated by the mountain itself and carrying about 16% sulfur content from the lava beneath. You soak here before the drive back to Berastagi. Bread, coffee and tea are provided during the day. Bring your own water if you prefer bottled.
