The Experience

We’d barely dropped our bags at the guesthouse in Bukit Lawang when the air hit me — thick and green, like someone had left a window open to the jungle. Our driver from Medan was all smiles even after three hours of winding roads (I tried to nap but mostly just watched palm trees blur past). Later, we wandered down the village path where kids waved and a guy selling fried bananas grinned at my attempt to say “terima kasih.” I still think about how the river sounded that first night — not loud, just always there.

The next morning started early with coffee strong enough to wake anyone. Our guide, Rini, showed up right on time and handed out rain ponchos “just in case” (she winked — it was already humid enough to swim through). The jungle trek itself…honestly, I didn’t expect it to feel so alive. There were these moments where everything went quiet except for something moving above us — then suddenly an orangutan appeared, orange against all that green. Rini told us her name was Minah and she’s been spotted here for years. After hours of walking (my legs were jelly), we reached the Bohorok river.
