The experience
The tour starts with pickup at your Medan hotel at 8am or at Kualanamu airport if you arrive on a morning flight. The drive to Bukit Lawang takes around two hours in an air-conditioned vehicle. Once you arrive, you change clothes and head into Leuser National Park with your local guide, who leads the trek to spot wild orangutans moving through the canopy. The trek finishes around 3pm, giving you time to wash up before the drive back to Medan.
Along the way you stop at a palm plantation and a rubber plantation to see how the land is used outside the national park. Lunch is a packed box eaten in the jungle, with fresh banana and fruit included. Your guide handles navigation and knows where orangutans are most likely to be found, though sightings are never guaranteed: the operator notes that in rare cases visitors do not see them.
The full day covers all entry fees, taxes and the trekking fee, so there are no surprises at the gate. You pay for meals and tips separately if you choose to tip your guide or driver. A moderate level of physical fitness is needed for the rainforest walking, and the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or cardiovascular concerns.
