The experience

The drive from Medan to Brastagi takes about two hours through jungle and into the Karo Highlands. Once there, you spend an hour exploring the mountain village: walking through its colorful fruit market where vendors sell passionfruit, mangostan, and local oranges grown in the volcanic soil, and standing between views of two active volcanoes, Sibayak and Sinabung. Brastagi was a colonial-era resort town, and the cool climate at altitude is immediate when you step out of the car.

After lunch, the route moves to Dokan, a traditional Karo Batak village where families still live in large communal houses called Djambur: eight families under one roof, with cattle, pigs and water buffaloes occupying the space below. You walk through a house to see how daily life works in this arrangement. From there, you drive through rural Karo scenery for about an hour to reach Sipisopiso waterfall, which drops directly into Lake Toba. A short walk from the waterfall base gives you views north across the crater lake, the largest in Southeast Asia. The itinerary notes this is a view from above. You do not descend to the lake's edge. You leave the waterfall at 2:40pm and arrive back in Medan by 5:40pm.

The tour runs with a live English-speaking guide and a private air-conditioned vehicle. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are entrance fees to Dokan village and the Lake Toba viewpoint. Food, drinks and driver tipping are separate. The itinerary can shift on the day depending on weather.
