The experience
The tour starts with a Barong and Kris dance performance at an open stage in Batubulan. A traditional dance that tells the battle between good and evil through movement and costume. From there, the route moves through the craft villages that ring Ubud: Tohpati for batik production, where you watch artisans apply wax and dye to cloth; Celuk, where silversmiths and goldsmiths shape bracelets, rings and necklaces by hand; and Mas, known for wood carving. Each stop lets you see the work happen, not just the finished pieces.
The drive north takes you past Tegalalang Rice Terrace, a tiered landscape of green paddies cut into the hillside on the road between Ubud and Kintamani. At Temen village, a local coffee farm introduces the tropical plants of the region (coffee robusta, snake fruit, vanilla, clove and others), and a guide explains the medicinal uses of the herbs grown there. After a coffee break, the route climbs to Kintamani itself, where you sit down to a buffet lunch at a restaurant with views straight across to Mount Batur's active volcano and its crater lake.
On the return, the tour stops at Tirta Empul Temple, a Hindu water temple near Tampaksiring famous for its holy spring water, used by Balinese Hindus for purification and religious ceremony. The final stop is Tegenungan Waterfall near Ubud Village, where you can swim in the cool water. An air-conditioned car or minivan carries the group throughout, with a Balinese driver who speaks English. All entrance fees, parking and a bottle of cold mineral water are included.
