The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Seminyak, Legian, Jimbaran, Sanur, Canggu, Ubud or another area on the island. Your first stop is Tegenungan Waterfall, a 20-meter cascade flowing through green rocky walls along the Petanu river. The site has local stalls if you want to linger. From there you head to Tirta Empul Temple, a complex built in 960 AD around a sacred spring in central Bali, where the water is used for cleansing rituals and the site carries the weight of the old Balinese kingdom.

The route then climbs to Kintamani Volcano in the central mountains. The caldera opens onto Lake Batur and Mount Batur's crater, a view that draws most visitors here. You'll have lunch at a restaurant positioned to take it in. After eating, the tour moves to Besakih Temple, Bali's holiest site and the largest temple on the island, sitting 1,000 meters up on Mount Agung's southwestern slopes. The complex holds at least 86 temples, with the main Pura Penataran Agung (Great Temple of State) at its center, and opens onto rice paddies, hills and streams. On the return to Seminyak, you stop at Bukit Jambul Rice Terrace in the eastern part of the island, then finish at Kertha Gosa, a royal palace complex dating to 1686 with painted ceilings in the Kamasan style and a floating hall. It has undergone restoration and remains one of Bali's most important historical sites.

The tour runs 9 to 10 hours and is private to your party only: no other travelers share the vehicle. Your driver speaks English and handles all entrance fees, parking and petrol. If you book the all-inclusive option, buffet lunch is included. Vegetarian meals are available if you request them at booking. Bring sunscreen and a camera, wear smart casual dress, and note that the tour involves significant driving and elevation gain, though it suits all fitness levels. Flexible timing can be arranged if you want to adjust the schedule.
