The experience
The ride starts at Saba Bay Stables with a safety briefing from professional grooms, then you head out along the volcanic sands and through the waves of Saba Beach. Mount Agung and Nusa Penida Island sit in the distance as you pass local temples and the wide sandy shoreline. The hour on horseback is the anchor of the day, but it is not the whole of it.
After the beach, the tour moves inland to Tegenungan Waterfall, where a maintained pathway and safety rail lead down concrete steps to the base. You can swim or stay dry and view from a distance. Next is Tegalalang Rice Terrace, the terraced rice fields carved into the hillside with the traditional Balinese irrigation system (subak) still in use. Lunch is at a multi-level restaurant in Ceking village overlooking the rice valley, with an Indonesian menu and views across the green landscape.
The coffee plantation stop shows robusta coffee, tropical fruits, and the process of making Balinese coffee the traditional way. You taste fresh coffee or ginger tea while looking out over the river valley. On the return to your hotel, if time allows, the driver can stop at art villages like Celuk (silver jewelry), Batubulan (batik), or Mas (wood carving), though this is optional and depends on your interest. The minivan is air-conditioned, the driver speaks English or Japanese, and the route covers the main hotel areas: Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, Nusadua, Tanjung Benoa, and Ubud.
