The Experience

We stepped out of the van near Ubud, and the first thing that hit me was the thick, green smell—like wet leaves after rain, even though it wasn’t raining. Our driver grinned when I hesitated at the entrance (the swings looked higher than I’d pictured), but he just waved us forward. A local guide handed us cold ice tea—sweet and herbal—and told us to try the “tandem swing first if you’re nervous.” I laughed because my hands were already clammy. You can hear birds everywhere, and somewhere below, the Ayung River humming along.

I tried the single swing first. The harness felt snug around my waist—honestly tighter than I liked—but as soon as they pushed me out over the valley, all I could do was yell. Not sure if it was fear or excitement. The wind whipped my hair back and for a second it felt like floating. My friend took about a hundred photos from one of those bird’s nest things (there are several—egg-shaped, heart-shaped, even a chicken nest which made us laugh). The staff helped us climb in and out of each one without rushing us or making us feel silly for wanting so many pictures. There were families with kids on the smaller swings too; everyone seemed to be cheering each other on.

Lunch came after we’d tried almost every swing (I skipped the adrenaline swing—I’ll admit it). It was simple Balinese food but tasted better than anything fancy because we’d worked up such an appetite. Sitting on that big stone overlooking the valley, legs still shaky from swinging, I realized I hadn’t thought about my phone or emails once all morning. Funny how a bit of fear and laughter can clear your head like that.
